Surface I, II, III

Concernant les séries Surface, j’ai souhaité produire des objets photographiques silencieux. J’ai utilisé la densité des brouillards matinaux comme un outil d’expérimentation pour crée des images voilées par une blancheur naturelle conduisant à une certaine nudité visuelle. Le pouvoir occultant du brouillard m’a permis d’obtenir de grandes surfaces vides pour extraire de leur contexte certains aspects du paysage. Le recours à ce phénomène atmosphérique naturel a revêtu une importance essentielle.

C ’est la qualité du brouillard qui a décidé des moments de prises de vues, mois après mois, dans un paysage rural choisi pour sa dimension banale, non spectaculaire. En ne laissant entrer à l’intérieur de l’image photographique qu’un minimum de signes visibles, je cherchais un moyen de m’interroger sur la façon dont nos perceptions visuelles s’activent, dont elles orientent notre lecture du monde.

While creating this series, I decided to place objects out of their context by isolating them using large blank surfaces. My intent was to produce purified images, without noise, by which I attempted to approach the borders of representation and a vacuity of the visible world.

Hence, I tried to create pictures fogged by natural whiteness, leading to a kind of natural bareness. The fog, chosen for its capacity to hide, was ideal to create emptiness, a minimal representation. It is its opacity which determined when to shoot, month after month, in a countryside chosen for its commonplace and non impressive quality.

Here, resorting to natural atmospheric phenomena carries an essential importance for the minimalist representation of the space. Hence, it had a lot of meaning for me to not counteract into the image making process by post-production treatments.

The predominance given to the white sky area generates a “vacant space” which makes a strip of scenery appear thus allowing both to question the limits of what is visible in photographs and to give a generic dimension to the landscape, brought back to a mere surface notion.
